The study “ The French, children andalcoholalcohol », conducted by OpinionWay for the League Against Cancer on the occasion of Dry January, reveals worrying perceptions about underage drinking. In the sample of this study, 70% of French people consider it acceptable to let adolescents consume alcohol during festive meals, and 30% even believe that it is acceptable to serve alcohol to adolescents under 15 years old. These figures are alarming because they highlight lightlight a lack of awareness of the dangers associated with alcohol consumption, particularly among young people.

Alcohol consumption increases the risk of many pathologies

Alcohol is a preventable risk factor for many types of cancer, such as those of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, liver, breast and colorectalcolorectal. Alcohol consumption leads to the formation of toxic metabolites, such asacetaldehydeacetaldehydewhich can damage theDNADNA and promote the development of cancer. In addition, the adolescent brain is particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of alcohol due to its still incomplete development, which increases the risk of developing addiction.

The report highlights the need for increased awareness of the dangers of alcohol, especially for young people. The League Against Cancer calls for concrete actions to combat alcohol consumption, in particular by strengthening control of sales to minors, limiting advertising for alcoholic beverages and considering the establishment of a minimum price for alcohol, a measure which has already shown its effectiveness in Scotland and Ireland.
