The suspect allegedly fired a shot in a boys’ restroom on his first day at Joppatowne School, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said.
“It’s a tragic day,” Mr. Gahler said.
No staff member reportedly heard the gunshot, but several heard the commotion it caused, according to the New York Post.
Some students who witnessed the crime carried the victim into the hallway, where nurses tended to his injuries. However, he later died in a Baltimore hospital.
The tragedy comes two days after the shootings in Georgia, where four people, including two students and two teachers, were killed. The shooter, Colt Gray, is also believed to have injured dozens.
“We all know about the horrific shooting that took the lives of four individuals in Georgia a few days ago, and here we are in Harford County with a school shooting,” the sheriff said.
The suspect tried to hide in an apartment near the school but was caught by authorities. He is expected to be identified when charges are released.
He was already known to law enforcement, according to Mr. Gahler. Since 2022, he has allegedly been involved in more than ten incidents where he played the role of victim, witness or suspect.
Mr Gahler believes the teenager will be charged as an adult without being questioned by police, due to “overwhelming evidence”.
