A “selfish” mother from Cleveland in the United States who left her 16-month-old baby to die alone at home to go on vacation for 10 days reportedly pleaded guilty on Thursday to aggravated murder.
“This case is one of those truly unimaginable cases that will follow me for many years,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley said in a statement Thursday, according to NBC News.
In court, Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty Thursday to the aggravated murder of her little Jailyn, whom she had abandoned alone at home and “unsupervised” last June, the time to enjoy a 10-day vacation in Detroit and in Puerto Rico, according to the American media.
Upon her return on June 16, the mother herself called the police after finding the little girl lifeless in a small dirty playpen.
She was then “extremely dehydrated,” the police noted, according to NBC News.
For the prosecutor, who did not mince his words, the guilty plea is only a “first step” to bring justice to the baby taken from life too soon.
“It’s our job to represent victims, and today we spoke on behalf of 16-month-old Jailyn – who is no longer with us – because of the selfish decisions her mother made. This conviction today is the first step towards justice for Jailyn,” concluded Me O’Malley, according to the American channel.
